Stress on Mothers of Children with Disabilities

Abstract
|
|
|
Background and Purpose: The purpose of this study lies in investigating the current home therapy for children with disabilities and the levels of stress for mothers of children with disabilities and in identifying their correlation.
Subjects and Methods: The study targeted 181 mothers of children with disabilities. First, the study prepared questionnaires by conducting a pre-test with 40 mothers of children with disabilities, and conducted survey research with mothers who raise children under 15 years old who are educated in 6 institutions in Gwangju and Jeonnam or who regularly visit hospitals from February 1-30, 2008. Then, the study applied a one-way ANOVA and a Duncan test by
using the SPSS(version 14.0) to process the data, and performed a Pearson¡¯s Correlation.
Results: In the current home therapy, mothers of children with disabilities replied that their level of acquiring techniques was insufficient, but perceived that the home therapy was effective. Also, they were found to experience difficulty in home therapy in terms of the lack of therapy technique, responsibility, and poor handling of their emotions, such as the transfer
of suffering. Plus, they were found to be under stress from anxiety about their therapy technique at home, responsibility, transfer of suffering of their children, worry about prognosis, non-cooperative husbands, non-cooperative children with disabilities, insufficient rest, and confirmation of a therapist, in order. Then, it was shown that regular visits to medica1
institutes, concem and love of farnily and husband, conversations with doctors or therapists, expectation of and trust in prognosis, conversation with other parents of children with disabilities, and having their own time were effective in resolving the stress, in order.
Conclusions: As a result, the lower the age of a mother was and the higher the monthly farnily income was, while being a housewife, the higher the stress was. In particular, as a was of resolving stress form home therapy, when the age of a mother was lower and a mother was a college graduate or over. The mother had a higher expectation of and a trust
in the regular visits to medical institutions, which helped those mothers a lot.
